CASTRIES, St.Lucia, CMC- St. Lucia have made a clean sweep of the OECS Table Tennis Championships which attracted participation from only two countries and ended here over the weekend.
St.Lucia emerged winners of all titles- Men’s and ladies’ teams, Men’s and ladies’ open singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The host as well as the lone visiting team St.Vincent and the grenadines both fielded A and B teams.
St.Kitts and Nevis were expected to attend but cancelled at the last minute due to travel difficulties.
Overseas based and Canadian ranked player Dawn Charles starred in the women’s open events by sweeping all three titles.
Charles registered a quick win in the finals against Charmaine Polius 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8 and teamed up with Shermaine Blasse Hyacinth to win ladies’ doubles against fellow St.Lucian Charmaine Polius and Simone Matthews 9-11, 11-8, 11-3 and 11-4.
Charles also teamed up with St.Lucia’s number two Chris Wells in the mixed doubles to defeat Adrian Albert and Shermaine Hyacinth in straight sets.
The most impressive Vincentian players were Tishuan Matthews and Unica Velox who placed third in the team’s event and ladies’ doubles.
St. Lucia’s number one ranked player Adrian Albert, a three time winner of the OECS singles title, defeated fellow St. Lucian Adrian Glace in the men’s singles final 12-10, 11-8, 11-2.
In the men’s doubles, Omarie Ferdinand and Adrian Glace emerged winners over Robert Ballantyne and Joseph Carrington in straight sets.
St. Lucia is now hosting the Caribbean Table Tennis Championships at the Beasejour Indoor practice facility in Gros Islet.
