A minibus driver was yesterday charged with causing the death of a man who succumbed to injuries months after he was struck by him.
Iyani Sue Chee, 28, of Lot 33 Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, denied the death by dangerous driving charge when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and he was eventually released on $200,000 bail.
It was alleged that on February 4, at the corner of Sheriff Street and Rupert Craig Highway, he drove minibus BPP 1578 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Herilall Shivcharan.
“The deceased rode his bicycle into my client’s minibus. My client then took the now deceased to the hospital, where he was treated and sent home. He subsequently died two months after that. I am very surprised that Sue Chee is even charged for his death,” attorney Patrice Henry said in defence of his client.
In seeking reasonable bail, he noted that Sue Chee was placed on $10,000 station bail after the accident and that he has no pending matters in court.
Since Prosecutor Seon Blackman did not object to bail, Magistrate Faith McGusty set bail at $250,000.
While asking for bail to be reduced to $75,000, Henry said that Sue Chee is not a flight risk, and added that he can guarantee the court that the man will return for trial.
McGusty then inquired whether Sue Chee was still in possession of his driver’s licence.
Upon being informed that he was, she stated that she could not understand his licence was not taken away by the police.
She added that she will be consistent with granting bail since earlier this week two persons charged with the same offence were granted bail in the sum of $200,000.
As a result, Sue Chee was placed on bail of the same amount and the case was adjourned until September 16.
