A number of local Muslim organisations are holding a ‘Peace and Solidarity Walk and Rally’ today to pray for peace and unity of the Muslim Ummah (Global Muslim Nation) and to call for an end of the bloodshed and massacre of innocent people, especially children in Syria, Egypt, Burma, Palestine and other countries plagued by sectarian conflicts.
The activities are being led by the Guyana Islamic Trust (GIT), the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana, the Queenstown Jama Masjid, the Darul-Uloom, the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex, among other organisations.
A release from GIT said the ‘Peace Walk’ with Muslims from different parts of the country, will commence at 4pm from the Parliament Building, proceeding east along Brickdam passing the United Nations office, turning north into Sandyman Place, continuing north into Albert Street, then proceeding east along Church Street to the newly constructed Queenstown Jama Masjid for the rally.
The gathering will be addressed by Muslim leaders and scholars and special prayers will be said for worldwide peace and unity. The activity is expected to create awareness of the worsening crisis in the parts of the Muslim world in which war, massacres and other atrocities are taking place.
The release said that the Muslim community of Guyana strongly condemns these atrocities, blatant violations of human rights and crimes against humanity and calls on the government, the international community and all people to take a strong stand and use their power and influence to bring an end to these human tragedies.
All Muslims and peace loving citizens are invited to echo the call for worldwide peace, unity, justice, tolerance and equality, and join the peace walk and solidarity rally, the release added.
The Muslim community is also asking all Guyanese to join in prayers and reflection as they observe the day of peace and unity.
