Arundina graminifolia commonly called the Bamboo orchid is native to Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is the only species in this genus.
Bamboo orchids are terrestrial orchids which grow in soil with tall grass like leaves looking like bamboo plants, hence the common name. The flowers are rosy pink/lilac, with a purple/magenta lip and look like Cattleya flowers. Only one or two flowers are produced at a time, on stems holding 10 or more buds. It flowers all year round.
Plant Bamboo orchids in full sun, in clusters in garden beds with well-drained soil. Water daily during the dry season as the plants like to be moist. Fertilize every two weeks with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster or Osmocote Slow Release fertilizer.
Bamboo Orchids have adapted well to the Caribbean and are a welcome addition to garden beds.
Over the weeks we have written on various types of orchids, best suited for the Caribbean.
This is a matter of knowing how much air, light and water the plants need and the sort of potting material to use. You should now have a better knowledge of the various types of orchids and should find it easier to identify them when making a purchase.
Until next week, Happy Gardening!
