BK Western Tigers defeated Camptown FC 2-0 in their third place playoff as action in the Slingerz/National Association for Women Football (NAWF) Goal for Gold tournament continued on Friday.
Played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground in Bourda, Solomon Austin opened the scoring for the West Ruimveldt side in the 24th minute.
Latching onto a lobbed Domini Garnett pass, the lanky Austin unleashed a powerful left footed volley from 22 yards out that wrong-footed the Camptown custodian and settled in the bottom left hand corner.
Western Tigers doubled their lead three minutes later, after being awarded a contentious penalty kick for handball in the box.
Hubert Pedro converted the resulting spot kick as he placed his right-footed effort to the lower right hand corner to seal the third spot for the Tigers.
With the win, Western Tigers walked away $500,000 and a trophy for their efforts while Camptown will collect $300,000 and a trophy for their displays.
In an invited post match comment, victorious coach Calvin ‘Flu man’ Allen stated, “It was much of what was expected. It was good to finish on a strong note and a conclusion to a tournament. I am proud to be the coach of the side and enthusiastic about the future.
“We squandered a few chances and should have put them away much easier. All respect to Camptown and what they stand for but we outplayed them in every department.”
In the earlier third place women’s fixture, Berbice edged West Demerara 4-2 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 1-1 in an entertaining matchup.
Abioce Haywood opened the scoring for the West Demerara women in the 14th minute. Sasha Loo equalised in the 18th minute for the eventual winners.
For their efforts, the Berbicians will collect $50,000 and the third place trophy, while the West Demerara side will receive $25,000 and the fourth place trophy. Both sides will also receive their $25,000 preparation fee.
