The decomposing body of an African male was yesterday discovered floating in a canal at Long Pond on the West Bank Demerara and is still to be identified.
Sometime around 11am yesterday the supervisor of a privately owned sugar estate at Long Pond made the discovery. He said the smell was unbearable and he felt it was a dead animal. However he noticed the body in the canal and raised an alarm. Police had to use a boat to retrieve it.
Persons in the nearby community have not reported any family member missing and are perplexed as to where the man might be from.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said the man appeared to be in his 40s and of African descent.
Further he pointed out that police had received some information on Sunday. It appears that they went to the scene sometime yesterday morning where they found the body.
Asked if the body bore marks of violence he said it was hard to say because of the state of the body. He said that investigators are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.
The Crime Chief said that the body might have been at that spot for about five days.
In a press release police said that the body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlor as investigations continue.
