A man and a woman were yesterday charged with assaulting each other and placed on bonds to keep the peace.
Ann Maria Sookram, 20, of East Coast Demerara and Ashton Edwards, 19, of Lot 31 Shopping Plaza, South Ruimveldt were charged with unlawfully assaulted each other on August 23.
They both pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
According to Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, Sookram and Edwards share a child, but are separated. Mangru told the court that on August 23, Sookram went to Edwards’ home to drop off their child and he made a sexual advance towards her which she refused.
Mangru said Edwards became annoyed and dealt Sookram a slap across her face; she retaliated by cuffing him on his chest.
Mangru made no objection to bail.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry placed both parties on a bond to keep the peace and ordered that they receive counselling at Help and Shelter.
The matter returns to court on September 30 at Court One.
