Two men were yesterday charged and remanded to prison when they appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court accused of robbing a man of a cell phone and $50,000.
The charge read that on August 30 at Georgetown, Teyon Simon, 20, of Lot 61 Bent Street, Wortmanville and Lexroy Rickby, 20, of 11 Miles, Mahdia, robbed Mark Mollyneaux of a Blackberry Torch cellular phone and $50,000 total value being $200,000.
They both pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with aggravation.
Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru told the court that Mollyneaux was walking along Camp Street when the two accused allegedly approached him and grabbed onto his shirt. He added that they punched him and took away his cell phone and money.
Mangru said that after the two alleged attackers left, the virtual complainant followed them to the Meriman’s Mall where he raised an alarm and they were arrested. He added that nothing was recovered.
Mangru claimed that both of the defendants had pending matters of a similar nature in court. He objected to bail based on the prevalence and seriousness of the offence.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat in response to the prosecutor’s claim said he had no comment about whether his clients had any pending matters.
When asked by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry whether they had any pending matters, the defendants gave conflicting answers causing the magistrate to request that their criminal backgrounds be checked out.
The matter was then temporarily stood down.
When the matter resumed, the court was told that Rickby, a mason, had pending matters in court for which he was on bail during the time he allegedly committed the offence. However, Simon’s record was clean.
They were both remanded to prison until September 13.
