President of Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Leon Belony spelt his way to the GASP Open title last Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club pavilion.
Belony won with a spread of 868 winning six straight games gaining his best score of 96 for the word ‘boraxes’ in his second round match against Devraj Deonarine.
Placing behind the GASP Open winner were Colin Chichester and Wayne Cave. Chichester, second place finisher, amassed a total of 635 spreads while H.H Halim Generator Contractor’s B class tournament champion, Cave finished on 241 spreads.
Belony also defeated Robert Williams by a spread of 193 in the opening round along with Deonarine, Cave, Benjamin, Maurice Munroe and Chichester by respective spreads of 461, 470, 552, 468 and 498.
Cave, the tournament favourite was the only opponent that came close to challenging Belony but he fell short with Belony scoring 470 to his 423.
