Up to press time last evening, there had been no positive identification of the decomposing body which was found at Long Pond, West Bank Demerara on Monday.
Stabroek News was told that persons turned up at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour, where the body is being stored, but no one was able to identify it.
This newspaper was also told yesterday that the body is in an advanced state of decomposition and it is hard to make out the man’s features.
Asked what might have happened to him, Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said that police will have to await the findings of the planned post-mortem examination to determine how he died.
There had been reports that at least one bullet hole was spotted on the body but this newspaper was told that because of its condition and the fact that the body had been submerged in water, that would be hard to determine without an autopsy.
The supervisor of a privately owned sugar estate at Long Pond was the first person to spot the body floating in a canal around 11am. It is suspected that the dead man is of African-Guyanese descent and in his 40s. He was naked when his body was pulled from the water, this newspaper was told.
