The students of the L’ Aventure Secondary School, at Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara which was partly destroyed by fire on Wednesday, will be relocated to a building in the area, according to the headmistress Althea Daniels-Stuart.
Daniels-Stuart told Stabroek News yesterday that classes will begin at the new location on Monday. She said that so far she had heard nothing more about what might have caused the fire.
Based on reports, the fire was first spotted just before 8 am in the middle section of the school which houses the office, Form Two classrooms and the Home Economics Department. Residents rushed over and attempted to break down a door but were forced to retreat because of the thick smoke.
A bucket brigade operated until fire tenders arrived by which time the flames had spread. Fire-fighters were praised for their efforts in ensuring that at least half of the structure was saved.
At the time of the fire, there were some students in the back section of the building. They were evacuated to safety.
Daniels-Stuart had told this newspaper that the building had wiring issues and several reports had been made to the authorities. It is believe that this was the cause of the fire.
