The Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup group stage continues today with two slated fixtures, including an exciting showdown between the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Pele FC.
The GDF will engage Pele FC in the feature contest of the night at 8.30pm at the Tucville Community Centre ground.
Forced to settle for a nil-all draw in their opening group game against Fruta Conquerors, the army boys will need to secure a win to guarantee their place in the quarterfinal round and will depend on the trio of Royan Morrison, Delroy Fraser and Eusi Phillips to complete the objective.
Denzil Thompson, coach of the army unit, in a pre-match comment said “Preparations are in place. We are training at an intense level and working on a lot of intensive and extensive methods.”
“I won’t underestimate Pele because anything can happen on game day. I expect them to be as strong as any other team. I believe once you train purposefully and make the fewer mistakes you will come out victorious” Thompson said.
Knowing that a victory will secure their position in the next round and possibly eliminate the army side at the same time, Pele will depend on the likes of Shemroy Arthur, Dirk Archer and Okeene Fraser to pick up the all-important three points come opening whistle.
Pele FC coach Barry Myers, in an invited comment said, “It’s a tough nut we got to crack. The army is a well drilled team and I got a lot of respect for Denzil Thompson. Even though we are in a rebuilding process no team is going out on the field to lose.”
“We are gonna give a good account of ourselves and we are going out there to play good football which is a hallmark of the club,” Myers said.
The opening fixture at 6.30pm will see the Houston Stars facing off against the Bourda-based side, the Georgetown Football Club in a Group ‘C’ match.
