The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) last Friday held a one-day mini volleyball festival for children aged 9-13 years at the at the area “H” Ground, Port Mourant.
The event was conducted by BVA treasurer, Godwyn Allicock, ably assisted by national U-19 players Vashti Pooran, Darshnie Pooran and Devendra Motie Persaud.
According to Allicock, he was overwhelmed by the level of interest and enthusiasm displayed by the
students and their teachers and promised that the BVA will continue to monitor the game in the said schools.
Allicock expressed special thanks to the Regional Education Officer of Region Six, all the head teachers of the invited schools, the teachers that accompanied the students, the Rose Hall Town Interim Town Council, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports club (RHTYSC), the Port Mourant Training Centre, the Presidents of the BVA, the GVF, the Ministry of Education, Allied Arts Department and the FIVB. Children from Primary schools Courtland, Cropper, Belvedere, Fyrish, Albion Prim, Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant, Tain, Auchlyne and Secondary schools such as Lower Corentyne, Port Mourant, JC Chandisingh, Corentyne Comprehensive, Manchester Secondary and Winifred Gaskin attended the festival and were lectured on topics such as the history of volleyball, the role of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the aims of mini-volleyball festivals and the role of the BVA and the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF).
They were then introduced to basic volleyball drills with the emphasis on the overhead finger pass. Upon completion, the students and teachers expressed their satisfaction in being involved in the event. They said that they were willing to learn more and plan to organize practice sessions after school so that teachers and students can hone their skills to participate in friendly competition among themselves.
All of the participating schools received two kids’ volleyballs and a FIVB Development Net. A similar endeavor is being planned for schools in the West Berbice area shortly.
