Dennis Rampersaud, charged with failing to return a computer to a woman he is accused of raping, was yesterday refused bail and remanded to prison.
Rampersaud, 32, of Lot 158 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, on a charge of fraudulent conversion.
It is alleged that on December 19, 2012, at Main Street, Georgetown, he was entrusted with the laptop computer by the woman, with an agreement for him to use it and return it to her. However, he refused to do so when she requested the computer, the court was told.
Rampersaud pleaded not guilty and his lawyer Madan Kissoon asked for him to be released on bail. Kissoon said Rampersaud is not a flight risk since he is not the holder of a passport. He also noted that the man has been living at the same address since 2011.
But Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail on the grounds that Rampersaud is already before the court charged with the rape of the complainant.
Rampersaud was subsequently remanded to prison until September 20.
