KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC-Jamaica’s head coach Winfried Schafer says he is confident the Reggae Boyz can qualify for next year’s World Cup in Brazil despite its cellar position in the CONCACAF hexagonal standings.
Jamaica drew one all with Costa Rica on a stoppage-time goal by second half substitute Jermaine Anderson at the national stadium Tuesday.
While Anderson’s goal secured Jamaica’s fourth point in a fading campaign it did little to improve the team’s chances of qualifying for football’s biggest showpiece.
“Everything is still open; Mexico have eight points and we have four points,” Schäfer said.
“Now a draw is not enough, we have to win our next match in the United States.”
Jamaica will need to win their remaining two games against leaders USA (16) and Honduras (11), while hoping that Panama (eight) and Mexico (eight) fail to win any of their remaining two matches.
Costa Rica and USA have already booked their ticket to Rio.
The Reggae Boyz play the United States on October 11 and newly appointed Schäfer is confident of a win.
