The second leg of the annual Inter Guiana Games (IGG) will take place in neighbouring Suriname from October 17-21.
According to Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, Guyana’s under-19 sportsmen and women will lock horns with their Surinamese counterparts in four disciplines: athletics, basketball, swimming and volleyball.
The second leg follows last month’s successful staging of the first leg here in Guyana in which chess, cycling, football and table-tennis were contested.
In the first leg, Guyana won at cycling and table-tennis while their rivals took top honours in chess and football.
The Athletic Association of Guyana plans to run off trials today at the Police Sports Club Ground.
The male basketball team was selected from this year’s National School Basketball Festival (NSBF) while Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will be using the results from last year’s IGG trials to select this year’s team.
Volleyball players have been shortlisted and are currently in training.
Monday is the deadline for submission of teams to the National Sports Commission (NSC).
The aim of the games is to create possibilities for youths to come together and compete in different sport disciplines, focusing on better sport results and better understanding of each other’s culture.
