Nine female senior citizen residents of the New Nazareth home in Carmichael Street, Georgetown, were pleasantly surprised to receive hampers on August 24, donated by the Junior Chambers International Demerara and the Sony Movements Sound System.
A release from the JCI Demerara said that it was a group affiliated to the JCI Guyana, JCI West Indies and the larger international non-govermental leadership and community development organisation headquartered in USA with the vision of being the leading global network of active young citizens.
JCI Demerara’s mission is to provide developmental opportunities that empower young persons to create positive change. It works with government agencies, private sector organisations and wider civil society in order to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
It partnered with Sony Movements Sound System for this venture as it sees service to humanity as the best work of life and the home gives elderly women a safe haven.
Chairman of the St Vincent de Paul Sacred Heart conference-managed home, Martin Bollers expressed gratitude on behalf of the residents and indicated that since the home operated by the generosity of private individuals and businesses, new donors were always welcomed.
Sony Movements Sound System’s owner Collin August said he had always been encouraged by his mother to get involved in meaningful community projects so he was pleased to assist when approached by JCI Demerara. He said that the home must be commended for giving so many women a safe place over the last 28 years.
JCI Demerara’s chairman, Shawn Austin said that the NGO was currently working on a number of projects nationwide including first aid training, a mentorship programme at the Dolphin Secondary School, collaborating with the Guyana Police Force to paint road signs and to organize seminars to promote road safety and defensive driving. The NGO will also collaborate with IPED to provide entrepreneurial training to youth.
He invited the public to collaborate with the NGO including attending their members’ meetings the third Thursday each month at the Critchlow Labour College from 5:30 pm. JCI Demerara is on facebook and can be contacted on cellphones 626-9042 and 660-1504.
