Two persons were yesterday granted bail and placed on a bond to keep the peace after they allegedly assaulted each other.
Oret West and Natasha Jonas were both charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, when they appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. They pleaded not guilty.
The unrepresented West told the court that the day in question, he was passing Jonas’s home in the company of two co-workers. “We were talking and laughing minding our own business,” he said. West told the court Jonas verbally assaulted him. She then came out of her yard and an argument ensued, he alleged, during which she attacked him with a spade. “It was in self-defence that I cuffed her, Your Worship,” he concluded.
But Jonas told the court a different story. Jonas said West usually interferes with her 15-year-old daughter. She said that the day in question she objected, telling him to leave her daughter alone. This infuriated West, Jonas said, and he attacked her. She said a few men from the area went to her rescue.
Police prosecutor Vishnu Hunt did not object to bail.
West, 26, of Lot 4 Tucville Terrace was granted bail in the amount of $80,000. Jonas, a food vendor, of Lot 85 Guyhoc Park was granted $10,000 bail. Both parties are to return to court on September 30
