KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC-Celebrated Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has awarded scholarships totaling over 700, 000 Jamaican dollars to seven needy high school student athletes on the island.
The money, raised through her recently launched Pocket Rocket Foundation, will go toward the cost of tuition, fare, books, stationery, lunch and other needs of the recipients.
Jamaican firm Grace Kennedy has already donated 600, OOO dollars to the Pocket Rocket Foundation, from a million dollars pledged during its launch in May.
“Through her actions today and over the years, Shelly-Ann has shown that she believes in the youth of Jamaica and she is pulling out all the stops to empower the youngsters of our nation,” said Anthony Lawrence, Global Brand Manager, and Grace Foods.
“We are extremely happy to be partnering with her in helping to finance these scholarships which we know will transform the lives of many Jamaican children”.
The seven children were awarded scholarships each with a value of 100,000 dollars and will benefit each year until graduation on the condition that they maintain good grades and represent their institutions in sports.
The scholarships are open to all students enrolled in a Jamaican high school from Grade 8 to Grade 13.
“Anywhere in the world you are you can achieve, if you believe and have the support.” Fraser-Pryce told the scholarship winners during the awards presentation in Kingston.
Fraser-Pryce is a double Olympic Sprint Champion and Triple World Champion.
