New Amsterdam ‘A’ defeated Corriverton ‘A’ to win the Berbice Table Tennis Tournament held last Sunday.
Featuring a team comprising Richard Bacchus, Floyd Conway and Joshua Lalbachan, New Amsterdam ‘A’ emerged triumphant by a 3-1 margin as they defeated the team that included Gibran Hussain and Sherwin Sahadeo.
Lalbachan overcame both Hussain and Sahadeo while Hussain registered the only win for the losers when he beat Conway. New Amsterdam ‘A’ would also win the doubles match-up.
New Amsterdam ‘B’ comprising Nicholas Lawrence, Stephan Sankar and Jordan Conway edged the New Amsterdam ‘C’ side made up of Tony Amerally, Levan Butchey and Ryan Anderson by a 3-2 score line in the third place match-up.
In the semi final rounds, the eventual winners defeated New Amsterdam ‘C’ 3-0.
The tournament which had been sanctioned by the Guyana Table Tennis Association saw the best racquet wielders in Berbice in action. Four teams each from New Amsterdam and Corriverton featured in the event. The teams which comprised two and three players each were divided into two groups, with the winner and runners-up of each group advancing to the semi finals.
The tournament was also used as a yardstick for the second annual Berbice open which is expected to be bigger and better this year.
