Amelia’s Ward Jets defeated Retrieve Raiders 70-63 when the Trophy Stall Regulation Open Basketball Tourney continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court in Linden on Friday.
The Webster brothers, Allister, Shane and Joel led the number two ranked side as they recorded figures of 16, 15 and eight points respectively. Sheldon Noel top scored for Raiders with 15 points while Neil Marks and Dauwin Lovell netted nine and eight points correspondingly.
The opening period belonged to the Amelia’s Ward side as they opened a 15-9 lead. They extended their advantage in the second period as they outscored the Raiders 19-14 going into the half at 34-23.
Their dominance continued in the third stanza as they added a further 18 points to their tally to go into the fourth quarter ahead 52-39.
With a 13 point cushion going into the fourth, the Jets withstood a match high 24 point haul from the Raiders to secure their first win of the event.
In the other matchup, Half Mile Bulls edged Bankers Trust Falcons 48-45. Terron Welch and Michael Turner netted 15 and 14 points respectively in the win. Devon Thompson and Dale Sauers were the chief scorers for losers as they registered 11 and nine points correspondingly.
In an opening period which failed to separate the two sides at 10-10, the Bulls in the second stanza restricted the Falcons to a meagre five points to go into the half leading 25-15.
The pivotal third period would see a revival of the Falcons’ offensive output as they recorded a match high 21 points to level the scores at 36-36 going into the fourth. However, the Bulls outscored their opponents 12-9 in the final period to capture the hard-fought win.
