In observation of Education Month and in keeping its objective of improving children’s literacy the Guyana Book Foundation donated over 18,000 books to 133 schools in three regions. “Fifty-four nursery, 70 primary and 9 secondary schools in Regions Five, Region 3(Essequibo Islands and riverrain schools) and Region 2 (Pomeroon River and Lakes) will benefit from Caribbean and North American and locally published GBF books,” the organisation stated in a press release.
The books were delivered to the locations with the assistance of the regional education departments of the respective regions.
The foundation believes that the donation will ensure that the children have access to high quality books with engaging stories relevant to their realities thus encouraging them to read outside their required text books. “Our hope is that young people will develop the love of reading that will stay with them throughout their lives so that they become critical thinkers, lifelong learners and engaged citizens,” the foundation’s release said.
