The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc has issued a warning against the dumping and burning of garbage near its new Sophia Sub-Station.
GPL said in a press release that it had noted that persons were dumping and burning garbage along its recently constructed fair-weather pathway leading to the New Sophia Substation, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. The pathway, located east of PNC Headquarters, Congress Place, Sophia, is the only access to the Sophia Sub-station.
The burning of garbage in proximity of the power lines located along the roadway to the sub-station can result in serious consequences including damage to the utility poles, lines, fibre optic cables linking GPL systems and the immense disruption of electricity supply, GPL said.
The company has since taken measures to deter the public from further engaging in the illegal dumping and burning of garbage by erecting a barrier preventing unauthorised person(s), animal drawn carts and vehicles from entering the area.
Further, the release said, GPL is engaging the Georgetown Mayor and City Council to assist in alleviating the problem.
The New Sophia Substation is one of the seven being constructed under GPL’s Infrastructure Development Programme aimed at improving the quality of electricity being supplied to customers.
