Courts Guyana/Unicomer yesterday turned the sod for the building of a US$5 million distribution centre at Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara.
The 60,000 sq ft state-of-the-art distribution and loading facility will be built on 4 acres of land and will have 18 loading bases and equipped with fully electronic forklifts.
Financing is being provided by Republic Bank and the construction will be done by Nabi Construction Company.
Speaking at the ceremony yesterday Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Clinton Urling
said the decision by any company to invest must not be taken lightly, since it requires financial costs, risks, commitment and dedication. “These ceremonies are welcomed because they represent a bright and prosperous future for Guyana, they create employment,” Urling said.
Executive Vice President & Vice Chairman of Unicomer Group Guillermo Siman recalled that it was 20 years ago that Courts first opened its doors to the Guyanese public and it has been growing rapidly ever since. In 2006, he said, “Unicomer acquired Courts and since then we have opened a number of other branches of Courts and Lucky Dollar [stores].”
Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh highlighted the importance of Courts’ pioneering of the hire-purchase industry. He said that before the arrival of Courts persons had to save for years in order to make a significant purchase. “Courts has upgraded the standard of living of our people, all you have to do is prove to Courts that you are gainfully employed [and] earn a regular income…,” he added.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds urged Courts to continue to raise the bar of the service it provides. “The very fact that courts came to Guyana shows a great sense of confidence…,” he added.
