An 18-year-old Albouystown man is now in jail awaiting his next court date after he was refused bail on a robbery charge stemming from an attack on a woman in the community.
Japhet Vancooten is alleged to have been one of the two men who robbed Fiona Subratee at Hunter Street, Albouystown.
Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru told the court that on April 21, Subratee, who was asleep in her bed, was awakened by Vancooten, who was holding an ice pick to her neck. Mangru said a few seconds after, Vancooten’s accomplice entered the room brandishing a gun. The two then proceeded to rob Subratee of a quantity of household articles, amounting to $130,000.
Vancooten, a mason, of 99 Bel Air Street, Albouystown, pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Mangru objected to bail on the grounds that Vancooten and Subratee are known to each other and once bail is granted he may intimidate her.
As a result, bail was denied and Vancooten was remanded until October 8.
