An East Coast Demerara man was yesterday refused bail when he appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court accused of having had a quantity of cannabis sativa concealed in a milk tin at Ogle.
Treven Braud, 28, of Lot 9 Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to trafficking in narcotics when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore.
It is the police’s case that on September 25 at the Ogle International Airport Braud had in his possession 380 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The facts of the matter are that on the day in question Braud allegedly had the illicit drug concealed in a Fernleaf milk tin amongst other items he was about to ship same to his brother in the interior. Braud was represented by attorney James Bond, who told the court that the drug was never found in his client’s possession.
Instead, he said, it was found in a sealed milk container that had not been tampered with.
“My client has no knowledge of the contents of that container,” Bond added.
In his argument for bail, he further accused the police of profiling his client. “My client is not a flight risk. It is because he has dreadlocks that the police are accusing him of crime,” Bond said.
Police Prosecutor Ser-geant Alexis David-Hossanah objected to bail on the grounds that no special reason was provided for bail to be granted.
She added, “We have documents to prove that he was sending this and other articles to a man proven to be his brother, Your Worship.”
Bail was refused and Braud is to return to court on October 11.
