Two men were yesterday placed on $900,000 bail each after they were charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of 22-year-old Tavel Gilbert.
Rondell Harry, 49, of South Ruimveldt Gardens, was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to
answer to the charge which stated that on June 7, at Mandela Avenue and Pineapple Street, he drove his motor car in a dangerous manner causing the death of Gilbert. Marvin Massiah, 23, of Lot 3667 North Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was charged with riding his motorcycle in a dangerous manner also causing the Gilbert’s death.
Neither of the two parties was required to plead to the indictable matter.
Counsel Glen Hanoman, who represented Massiah, said he was previously placed on $50,000 station bail and that he currently reports to the East La Penitence Police Station once every week. He added that the now deceased Gilbert was a friend of the defendant.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones informed the court that the accused did not provide any address to the police and that other charges in relation to this matter are likely to surface. He said Massiah over took a vehicle which resulted in the accident.
Attorney Peter Hugh said that Harry is the Sales and Marketing Manager at Instant Security Service and added that he was placed on $ 100,000 station bail.
Hugh said that on the day of the accident, Harry was proceeding west along Mandela Avenue and attempted to turn into Pineapple Street when a motorcycle collided with his car. He said his client was not a flight risk.
Jones objected to bail being granted based on the circumstances of the accident. He also agreed with Hugh’s statement in relation to his client attempting to turn into Pineapple Street. He said, however, that Harry failed to do so when it was safe.
Magistrate Ann McLennan granted both parties $900,000 bail each and they were remanded until October 8 when the matter will be called at Court 1.
