A carpenter was yesterday remanded to prison for allegedly stealing a quantity of items from another man’s home.
Mark Mangal of Lot 200 Barr Street, Kitty, after admitting to having spent 18 months in prison for a similar offence, pleaded not guilty to the charge when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It was alleged that on September 25 at David Street, Kitty, he broke and entered the dwelling home of Paul Booker and stole $60,000, a computer, a fan and a television among other items, a total value of $742,000.
Mangal, who was unrepresented by counsel, told the court that he did not steal the items mentioned in the charge

When Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry asked him whether he had ever had any troubles with the law, Mangal said yes. “Your Honour, I was charged with threatening language and simple larceny. I been in jail for 18 months,” Mangal said.
The facts read by Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru stated that on September 25, Booker secured his home and went to the hospital. When Booker returned home, he saw a window open and upon checking, he discovered the articles missing. He added that the accused and another male were seen removing the articles.
Mangru objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and the concern that if granted bail, Mangal might not return for trial.
Bail was refused and Mangal was remanded to prison until October 1.
