The Bank of Guyana has issued two souvenir coins to mark the 250th anniversary of the Berbice Slave Rebellion and the 175th anniversary of Indian Immigration to Guyana.
A release from the Central Bank said that both commemorative coins have a face value of two thousand dollars and are made of cupro-nickel weighing 28g each.
The bank said that the reverse of the 1763 slave revolt coin was designed by Adrian Juman and depicts a slave rescued from his owner by Cuffy; his broken chains represent the dawn of a new day of freedom and liberation.
It said that the reverse of the 1838 Indian arrival coin was designed by Courtney Douglas and depicts the first two ships – Whitby and Hesperus – representing the beginning of the Indian Indentured System in British Guiana.
Both coins have the National Coat of Arms on the other side.
