A man is now a remanded prisoner after being charged with the attempted murder of his cousin.
Travis Porter, of Lot 502 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was not required to plead to the indictable offence when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. The charge read by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry stated that on September 23, at West Ruimveldt, Porter attempted to murder Shamar Porter.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru informed the court that Travis and Shamar are cousins. He said that on September 23, Shamar had borrowed Travis’ cell phone, which resulted in an argument. He said that it was during this altercation that Travis dealt his cousin several chops about his body.
This, Mangru said, left Shamar hospitalised. He has since been released from the hospital.
Mangru also stated that Travis had admitted to the police that he hit Shamar with a piece of wood.
When Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry enquired whether Travis had any pending matters or previous trouble with the law, he told the court that he was involved in a simple larceny matter.
Mangru objected to bail based on his concern for the safety of the victim and he said that if granted bail it was very likely that Travis may tamper with the witness in this matter. He also felt that Travis may not return for trial.
Bail was denied and the matter was adjourned until October 18, when it will be called again for reports and fixtures.
