BK Western Tigers edged Northern Rangers 1-0 when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup continued at the Tucville Community Ground on Thursday.
Winger Hubert Pedro settled the gritty affair through a 61st minute penalty kick conversion.
In the opening period which was devoid of clear cut chances, the West Ruimveldt side fashioned the two best chances in the space of a minute through their captain Phillip Rowley and defender Ryan Adolph.
Picking up the ball 25 yards from goal, the box-to-box midfielder Rowley unleashed a powerful flat right-footed effort that was just tipped around the bar through an acrobatic save by custodian Stephen Roberts in the 33rd minute.
The resulting corner kick would see Adolph’s left footed volley effort from the right side of the 18-yard area desperately cleared off the line as the half ended with the scores unchanged.
Jerome Richardson would almost break the deadlock in the second period for Western Tigers.
Rising above everyone from a left sided corner kick, Richardson’s powerful header in the 50th minute would bring out another effective save from Stephens as he kept the scores level.
However, Western Tigers would be awarded a contentious penalty kick as Rowley was brought down in the area, much to the protests of the Northern Rangers players.
Stepping to take the spot kick, Pedro would send Roberts the wrong way as he drilled his right-footed effort low and hard to the bottom right hand corner of the goal to settle the contest.
In an invited comment, victorious coach Calvin Allen said:”To be honest it was a very messy and scrappy game. We lost focus before the game. All in all it was a scrappy performance.”
In the earlier fixture, Santos FC came from behind to defeat Beacons FC 4-1. Michael Pedro, Glenorvan Edmonds, Jamaal Downer and Anthony Abrams netted for the victors in the 44th, 59th, 83rd and 87th minutes respectively.
Desmond Cottam gave Beacons the early lead with a 31st minute strike.
