Roraima Bikers Club’s Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams outsprinted national road race champion Raynauth Jeffrey to take top honours in the 11th annual Victor Macedo Memorial road race yesterday.
Williams prevailed over a star-studded field to win the 133km (80 miles) trek edging Jeffrey of Team Coco’s in a two-man sprint finish.
The tireless Jeffrey attacked several times in the final kilometre but Williams caught him in the finishing straight and easily won the sprint for his biggest victory of the season.
The national cyclist clocked three hours, 16 minutes, 35 seconds for the event which rolled off in Peter Rose street, continued to Dora on the Linden Soesdyke Highway and concluded on Homestretch Avenue.
Besides claiming the $60,000 cash prize and winner’s trophy, Williams also rode off with two sprint tokens while four went to Jeffrey.
Last year’s road race champion, Orville Hinds completed the podium after crossing the line 45 seconds after Jeffrey.
Top veteran Godfrey Pollydore, junior star rider, Shaquel Agard, Delroy Hinds, Paul Choo-Wee-Nam and junior road race champion, Michael Anthony rounded out the top eight paid positions.
Orville Hinds also pocketed sprint prizes (three) while one apiece went to his brother Delroy, 2011 meet champion Albert Philander and Warren ’40’ McKay.
This year’s event which was sponsored and organized by the Flying Stars Cycle Club attracted a record 59 cyclists including female champion, Naomi Singh.
Other categorical winners yesterday were Stephen Fernandes (veterans), Agard (junior) and Jude Bentley (Mountain Bike).
