The annual schools table tennis tournament sponsored by telecommunications provider Digicel in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is set to serve off next month.
According to a press release from the GTTA, the tournament will run from November 1-4 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The categories to be contested are mini-cadet, cadet, juniorteam events and boys and girls singles.
The GTTA release stated that the aim of the tournament is to promote the sport countrywide; to foster camaraderie among students; promote healthy lifestyles through the sport and to have more players actively participate in the sport at the recreational and competitive levels.
The GTTA added in the release that it will provide umpires, tables and balls among other resources to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.
This year the GTTA will include an Open novices’ category for beginner level players and players from new schools in an effort to encourage more participation in the sport. One team from each school can play in this
category and players who have never participated in tournaments organized by the GTTA and who cannot make their top two teams in the respective categories 11, 13, 15 will be allowed to participate.
“We sincerely feel that this tournament can be successful in achieving its objectives and would like to therefore meet with representatives of schools on 30 October at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue from 5pm,” stated the release.
Prizes in the form of trophies and medals will be presented to the first three finishers in each category. In addition, prizes will also be presented to the most outstanding male and female players; the most improved male and female players; the best dressed school; the most disciplined school and the school with the largest support during the tournament.
