The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) overcame Silver Shattas 2-0 when the inaugural Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Premier League commenced on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in Linden.
Sherwin Caesar and Delwyn Fraser recorded second half conversions for the army side in the 77th and 90th minutes respectively.
The Georgetown side would begin the opening period on a positive note as midfielder Eusi Phillips forced an acrobatic save from custodian Kellon Major in the 20th minute with a powerful right-footed effort that had to be tipped around his left crossbar.
GDF almost broke the deadlock again seven minutes later through a goal mouth scramble only for the resulting danger to be cleared desperately off the line by the Silver Shattas rearguard.
Forced to defend for the majority of the opening period, Silver Shattas created their best chance in the 41st minute through captain John Waldron whose effort from the left side of the field went just wide of the near post.
A constant threat throughout the fixture with his searing pace, Fraser would force a magnificent save from Major in the 57th minute.
Cutting into the box from the right wing, Fraser rounded his marker before striking a powerful left-footed effort just inside the centre of the 18-yard area that forced Major to parry acrobatically around his left post.
The Silver Shattas backline would finally be breached as Caesar pounced on a moment of miscommunication between the defence and Major, heading the ball away from their path before finishing just inside right upright from the right side of the box.
The fixture would finally be put to bed in the most brilliant of fashion.
Running onto a Phillips through pass on the right wing, Fraser, upon driving into the area, dribbled and faked his marker until he fell on the ground before finishing calmly into the back of the net inside the six yard area to bring the crowd to its feet.
