The quarterfinal round of the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Players Cup continues today with an exciting double header at the Tucville Community Centre ground.
The feature contest of the evening at 8.30 pm will see the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) opposing Campbellville-based side, Camptown FC.
Confident, following their hard fought 1-0 win over Pele FC, the army side will require a continued assault from the trio of Eusi Phillips, Delwyn Fraser and Sherwin Caesar to power them to victory against a determined Camptown side and their trio of Devon Forde, Oswald Cornette and Jahaal Greaves.
GDF coach, Denzil ‘Hunky Brains’ Thompson during an invited comment said, “Because it’s a quarterfinal match we need to win to get to the semifinal which means the application of the players is very important,” adding, “It’s important that they play in units and play as a team. Once we play well we will be victorious.”
In the opening encounter at 6.30 pm, familiar foes will face off as home side Fruta Conquerors tackles Santos FC in what is anticipated to be a humdinger of a fixture in their storied rivalry.
Defeated in their previous encounter, 2-1, Conquerors will look to the likes of Eon Alleyne, Delon Williams and Dwayne Lawrence to reverse their stuttering fortunes when they match up with the trio of Lerone Charles, Odel Williams and Glenorvan Edmonds at kick-off time.
Sampson Gilbert, coach of the Tucville-based side during a pre-match comment said, “I am looking forward to win the game. This game we see as necessary to win to compensate for our ordinary performances of late.”
His opposite number, Dwain Babb, in an invited comment said, “I’m looking to make it 4-0 against them for the year. It will be a tough game, Conquerors is a team that never gives up but we also never give up.”
“Preparation has been coming better and I am expecting a good game and to come out victorious,” added Babb.
