Camptown FC outmanoeuvred the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 2-0 in the last quarterfinal fixture of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Friday.
On target for the Campbellville side were Malcolm Wilson and Jahaal Greaves in the 71st and 73rd minutes correspondingly. Opening at a frenetic pace, Camptown would send the first warning shot through Devon Forde in the 16th minute.
Rising inside a crowded penalty area to meet a right sided cross, Forde would power his header just wide of the inside of the right post. The army boys would fashion a chance of their own in the 27th minute through Selwyn Williams.
Attacking the first post from the right side of the penalty area, Williams forced a smart save from always dependable Oswald Cornette to his left after striking right footed shot from a Delwyn Fraser cross from the right flank.
The crossbar would come to the rescue of the Camp Ayanganna unit in the 38th minute, denying a gem of a free kick by veteran midfielder Troy Prescod.
Turning back the hands of time, Prescod would unleash a thunderous left footed strike from the 28 yards out in the middle of the field that gave the GDF custodian Carl Stephenson no chance.
Prescod would take aim at the woodwork once again a minute later, flashing his left footed effort from 32 yards out right down the centre of the park just outside of the left upright.
Continuing to get the better of the exchanges in the second period, Camptown would be awarded a penalty following a handball inside area by Devon Harris off a Prescod free kick from just outside the 18 yard box.
Tasked with responsibility of taking the spot kick, Wilson would break the deadlock with efficiency, placing his left footed shot to the right side of the goal. The victory would be sealed two minutes later as Greaves etched his name on the scorer’s sheet.
Running into the penalty box from the left side of the field, Greaves would place his right footed effort into the bottom of the left hand corner after receiving a accurate flat cross from winger Ron Liverpool.
In the random semi-final draw that was conducted to decide the respective matchups, Alpha United was drawn against Riddim Squad FC while Camptown FC will tackle Santos FC. The semi-final matchups will commence on Wednesday at the same venue.
