Santos FC edged Fruta Conquerors 1-0 in their quarterfinal showdown when the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Friday.
In a fixture that hardly lived up to its billing, Jermain Fraser capitalised on poor organization by the Conquerors defence to give his side the lead in the third minute. Receiving a cross from the right side of the field, Fraser easily tapped home his effort unchallenged inside the 18-yard box.
The Tucville side would create their best opportunity of the half in the 31st minute. Running into the penalty area from the left flank, Michael Henry would head the ball unchallenged narrowly over the crossbar after collecting a perfectly weighted right sided cross by Dwayne Lawrence.
Santos almost doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime through an Odel Williams shot.
Lurking outside the 18-yard area for a corner kick, Williams unleashed a powerful right footed effort after intercepting a poor clearance, forcing an acrobatic save from keeper Alex Murray to his left.
The second period began with Fraser nearly adding to his tally in the 51st minute. Cutting across the penalty box after intercepting the ball, Fraser lashed a right footed strike that went narrowly wide of the right post.
Fraser would be at it again 10 minutes later, ratting the crossbar from just inside the foul area as Conquerors struggled to contain him.
The 79th minute would see Conquerors wasting a glorious opportunity to level proceedings. Headed back across goal into the direction of the waiting Jermaine Junior following a left sided cross by Lawrence, Junior would place the resulting right footed effort just over the cross bar.
