A two-storey home at Friendship, East Coast Demerara was destroyed early yesterday morning by a fire of unknown origin.
Residents of Brushe Dam, Friendship said the house was occupied by an elderly man who lived overseas and visited from time to time. According to a neighbour, the man was at home at the time of the fire.
The fire reportedly occurred around 04:00 hrs.
When Stabroek News arrived at the scene, only the walls of the house were left standing and Guyana Power and Light (GPL) workers were there.
“I saw the fire by his window and I thought he was in there but when we ran out I see him on the bridge,” a neighbour said, recalling that she had heard a loud noise minutes before the house went up in flames.
Another neighbour, Darren Dorsett said that when he saw the fire he quickly rushed out of his home and started to throw water on his house to prevent it from catching fire. He said that other people in the village helped to soak houses that are close to the burnt out house.
“I saw the sparking and then I hear a loud sound and the fire started to spread,” said Dorsett.
He said that the Guyana Fire Service took approximately 30 minutes to arrive. However, he added that the firemen quickly managed to control and douse the flames.
