The opening round of the Guyana Chess Federation Sasha Cells 2013 Junior Chess Championships begins on Saturday at the Olympic House in Kingston.
Defending champion Anthony Drayton who holds a FIDE rating of 1801 will attempt to retain his title against seven competitors.
The seven qualified players are Haifeng Su, Davion Mars, Roberto Neto, Saeed Ali, Omar Britton Grant, Rashad Hussain and lone female participant Sheriffa Ali.
The contenders will face each other, including Drayton, in a single round- robin encounter consisting of seven rounds. Players would be given 90 minutes each per round to steer their way to checkmate or register a victory over an opponent. The championship is expected to conclude on October 27th.
Drayton, a former student of Dolphin Secondary School emerged as National Junior Champion last year, clinching the title by a slim margin from former champion Su.
