Santos FC edged Camptown FC 4-3 on penalty kicks in their semi-final match-up when action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Players Cup continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Wednesday.
Locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra time, Santos custodian Devin Bennette denied his opposite number Oswald Cornette with a diving stop to his right to book his side’s berth in the final.
Jermain Fraser was on target for the winners in the eighth and 114th minutes while Malcolm Wilson and Troy Prescod netted for the losers in the 14th and 110th minutes correspondingly.
In what can be described as a back and forth opening stanza, Santos would break the early deadlock eight minutes into proceedings from a dead ball situation.
Receiving a free kick for a foul just outside the left side of the 18- yard area, Fraser would tap home inside the six-yard area after latching on to the resulting spot kick taken by wingback Kishawn Lovell.
Their lead would be short-lived as the Campbellville side equalised six minutes later from the penalty spot. Tasked with taking the spot kick awarded for a handball in the area, Wilson would power his left-footed strike to the left side of the goal. The second period would see both teams struggling to fashion opportunities on goal. Camptown midfielder Jahaal Greaves almost won it for his side in the 89th minute, only for his right-footed effort from just inside the right side of the penalty area to come crashing off the right upright.
However there would be a twist in the tale one minute later as Camptown midfield hard man Keville Frank picked up his second yellow card for interfering with play.
The first period of extra time would see Camptown almost going ahead in the 104th minute through a Troy Prescod free kick.
Stepping up to take the right-sided spot kick 21 yards from goal, Prescod would be denied by the woodwork as his dipping left-footed shot crashed onto the crossbar, leaving Bennette with simply no chance.
Prescod would etch his name five minutes into the second extra time quarter, tapping home within the right side of the six-yard box after collecting a cheeky pass from Greaves.
The equaliser would be found four minutes later as Fraser completed his double, heading home unmarked inside the six-yard area following a goalkeeping error from Cornette who misjudged a right-sided cross.
