Adiantum commonly called the Maidenhair fern originates from tropical Brazil. There are approxi-mately 200 species.
Maidenhair ferns are an old-time favourite, especially among the senior growers and collectors. They have wiry stems, delicate green fronds and delicate constitutions. They grow from underground rhizomes. The look very elegant and graceful when grown as potted plants. They like moisture and moist air, bright light in a shaded area but not direct sunlight.
Adiantum raddianum, the fine leaf variety, is perhaps the easiest to grow. Both the fine leaf and broad leaf varieties grow well here.
Plant ferns in a mixture of potting soil, fibre dust and fine charcoal. Do not allow the plants to dry out, as the foilage will get dry and brown. Fertilize with Miracle-Gro All Purpose Plant Food or Osmocote Slow Release Plant Food once per month.
