Four of the Guyanese found aboard a cargo vessel in Barbados with illegal drugs and a submachine gun yesterday made their first appearance before a magistrate on a total of ten charges. They were remanded to prison.
Stabroek News was unable to ascertain whether they were represented. However, they will return to court on November 15.
Based on information coming from the island the quartet appeared at the District A Magistrates’ Court.
The Royal Barbados Police Force spokesman Inspector David Welch in a correspondence identified those charged as seamen Tito Talo Moore, 26, of Linden Highway; Carlton Andre Lacaille, 43, of Caneville Grove, East Bank, Demerara; Burkeley Levert Crawford, 24, of Mount Sinai, New Amsterdam, Berbice; and Yagpaul Bhisundial, 30, of Edinburgh Scheme. They were jointly charged with possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis, trafficking in cannabis, importation of cannabis, possession of cocaine, possession with intent to supply cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, importation of cocaine, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal importation of a firearm.
According to Inspector Welch, the men were jointly charged on Friday while the four remaining members of the crew were allowed “to return to the vessel”.
In a press release the spokesperson had said that on Tuesday, October 15 a joint operation was carried out by members of the Police Drug Squad, the Enforcement Unit of the Barbados Customs and Excise Department and the Barbados Coast Guard on board a cargo vessel MV Rigina, which had sailed from Guyana and arrived in Barbados about 8.20 pm on 15 October. It was stated that 107 packages of cannabis weighing 101.02 kilogrammes, 20.6 kilogrammes of cocaine and one submachine pistol were found and seized.
