Athmaram Mangar has been sworn as the new commissioner at the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom), filling a vacancy created by the resignation of one of the commission’s latest additions, Jaya Manickchand.
The swearing in took place at the Office of the President in the presence of President Donald Ramotar, Chairman and Commissioners of Gecom and Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman.
Mangar is son of University of Guyana historian Tota Mangar.
Following the swearing in, President Ramotar acknowledged that the vacancy Mangar filled was created by the resignation of Manickchand.
“I hope that the work of the commission will be foremost in your mind as we move to improve democratic functions,” said Ramotar.
The other commissioners are Dr Keshav Mangal, Mahmood Shaw, Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Sandra Jones.
