A Cuban national was fined $30,000 yesterday after he pleaded guilty to entering Guyana illegally.
The charge read by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry stated that on October 12, at Lethem, Alexander Louis Bermudez entered Guyana by crossing a land frontier and did not present himself to an immigration officer.
Through an interpreter at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Bermudez said that he was a tourist from Cuba and when he visited Guyana he thought that he had a three month-visa in his passport.
He added that he did not know he had to get his passport stamped when he entered Guyana through Lethem.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry inquired whether he had any previous or pending issues with the law.
Bermudez stated that he did not and he was fined $30,000 with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
