Hikers Cadets edged the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) 6-5 in their first division showdown when action in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships continued on Friday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
Tow goals each from Aroydy Branford, Jamarj Assanah and Hilton Chester piloted the Cadets to the hard fought win. Kevin Spencer and Orland Semple led the Bourda side with respective doubles while Andrew Xavier netted a solitary strike.
In the second first division matchup, Hikers defeated Old Fort 6-3 led by a helmet trick from Captain Robert France. Shane Samuels and Yonnick Peters added one each for the Hikers to seal the win. On target for the losers were Tony Cole, Dwight McCalman and Ascofu Simon.
Top ladies side GCC Tigers mauled newcomers Old Fort Heat 23-0 compliments of a 10 goal haul by Captain Sonia Jardine. Jardine’s sister and national center forward Kerensa Fernandes added 7 goals while Tricia Fiedtkou and Ulrica Sutherland scored two each.
Tiffany Solomon and Sandy Roopnarine would complete the crushing win with one goal each.
Doubles from captain Gabriella Xavier and Shania Riley powered GCC Spartans to a 6-0 thumping of Hikers Revelation in the second female matchup. Samantha Fernandes and Aliyah Gordon added singles respectively to seal the win.
In the second division, Hikers Recruits disposed of Old Fort 8-2 led by a Leon Bacchus hat trick. Goals from Aroydy and Ryan Branford, Michael Harding, Jamarj Assanah and Joshua Carew completed the score line while Shaquille Thomas managed a double for Old Fort.
In the lone veterans’ match of the evening, GCC continued to crush all-comers as they defeated Old Fort by a 12-2 margin. Brothers Alan and Philip Fernandes led the scorers with a helmet and hat trick respectively while overlapping defenders Damon Woodroffe and Marcus Fiedtkou registered doubles.
Third sibling Stephen Fernandes netted GCC’s final goal while former nationals Ivor Thompson and Dexter Wyles scored on each for Old Fort.
