The Ministry of Health’s outreach on the weekend at Maria’s Pleasure Primary School, Wakenaam, provided services such as general medical checkup, screening for cervical cancer by visual inspection using acetic acid (VIA), eye and blood pressure testing, and blood donation.
A release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran explained that this outreach was a follow-up to one that was held recently on the island, when President Donald Ramotar and a large team of ministers had visited Wakenaam for several meetings where residents had indicated that they needed improved medical services.
The Cottage Hospital in Wakenaam provides various primary health care services with a resident doctor.
Ramsaran said that the ministry had brought the large multi-service team including a very skilled eye testing personnel. He said that there were lots of patients waiting for eye testing and they will be given the necessary recommendations up to and including referral to the Port Mourant National Ophthalmology Hospital for cataract surgery.
He revealed that next week there will also be a medical outreach held in Leguan, and that every month the ministry will increase the presence of doctors on the islands.
