Several days after the body of a 27-year-old farmer was extricated from the Bonasika Creek, Essequibo River, investigations are still being conducted to determine how he died.
The dead man has been identified as Anthony Evans, a resident of the Essequibo coast who had been reported missing. This newspaper understands that he had been missing for a considerable amount of time. A source said that the man has been buried already because his body was already in a badly decomposed state. “His whole top part was rotten and they just had to cut him and bury him right away.”
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News that the man’s body was found in a canal. He said that a post-mortem examination was conducted and the pathologist gave the cause of death as undetermined.
He added that at the moment they are still investigating the matter.
Asked about reports that the man’s hands were bound when he was found, Persaud responded in the negative. He said that a rope was however found around one of his feet.
A police official said that Evans was last seen alive at Bonasika Creek where he worked on September 20. The official said the man was never seen again until October 25 when his remains were found at Lower Bonasika.
Persons close to the case told Stabroek News that at this point the investigators have very little to work with. According to one source, it does not look like he was killed as there was no sign of violence or injuries.
There are still many outstanding questions surrounding the man’s death including how he came to be in the area where he was found, which is some distance away from his home, and what he was doing during the time that he was missing.
