The Ministry of Health arranged for an electrician from Georgetown to the fix the electrical problems at the Wakenaam Cottage Hospital’s mortuary. The mortuary is now fully functioning with all four of its cold chambers working.
A release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said that Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran on a follow up visit to the island on Saturday, visited the mortuary. He said that in the past, “One of the major concerns of the residents of Wakenaam was that the mortuary was not working, and when a person dies and they have to wait a little bit for funeral arrangements they have to take the body to Suddie which is very costly.”
Another concern of residents was when someone dies and there was need for police investigation, the body had to be taken to Georgetown for the post-mortem, and then the family would be burdened with arranging to bring back the body to the island for the funeral which was also costly.
Ramsaran pointed out that there are now two resident doctors at the hospital. He said that after the initial visit of the electrician some four to five months ago, three cold chambers were working, and he had brought back the electrician to fix the fourth chamber.
