Magistrate Judy Latchman on Tuesday ordered a vendor to obtain a licence to sell liquor and imposed a $20,000 fine on her for using abusive language on Special Constable Peters as he was conducting his duty.
The Georgetown Magistrates Court heard that on October 23, at Hinck Street, Georgetown, at 8pm, police conducting a campaign with respect to the sale of spirituous liquor found 48-year-old vendor Faye Medas selling alcoholic beverages without the benefit of a licence.
Prosecutor Vishnu Hunte told the court that police found Medas with 24 bottles of Guinness, 36 bottles of Banks beer, eight bottles of Heineken, five bottles of premium beer, five bottles of Mackeson, four bottles of Stag beer and three bottles of Corona beers. She was arrested and charged with illegal sale of spirituous liquor. On the same day, at Hinck Street, Medas abused Special Constable 11851 Peters as he was carrying out his duty, using an expletive against him. She pleaded guilty to the charges.
Medas’s lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat told the court that the words just slipped out of his client’s mouth. He also told the court that the woman was “a vendor trying to make a living” and that she has no previous matters or convictions.
