Khemraj Pooranmall emerged victorious in the Guyana Draughts Association’s (GDA) Annual 100 squares competition held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue on Sunday.
Pooranmall walked away with top prize sponsored by P and P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited International, earning 12 points to edge his closest competitor Steve Bacchus who finished with 11.
Bacchus for his efforts pocketed the Berbice Bridge Incorporated sponsored trophy and a wrist watch. Defending champion Carlton Simon failed to make an impression in the event.
Rounding out the top three was Mark Braithwaite who edged Esan Anderson via a tiebreaker to claim the Gentle Elias sponsored trophy and gift for the bronze position.
In the earlier segment contested at the same venue on Sunday, Pooranmall emerged victorious in the ‘A’ division as defending champion and GDA President Jiaram failed to retain his crown.
Wilfred Robinson claimed the second position while Simon edged Jiaram in a tiebreaker to take third place. In the ‘B’ division played the previous day, Braithwaite would emerge as the champion, relegating Anderson and Franklyn Thomas to second and third place respectively.
